Miki lost most of her family when she was 8 - an earthquake destroyed their apartment building and they'd been buried in the rubble for 5 days before Miki and the bodies of her mother and little sister were unearthed. Her older brother's body was never found.
Miki's father had been working late when the earthquake happened - a workaholic before the disaster he threw himself even deeper into his research, leaving Miki to the care of doctors and nurses, who cared for her physical injuries as best they could. Surgeons, physiotherapists and more; it took years of work to get her back on her feet. But now she is on those feet and attending a new school.
She's a reasonably bright girl - it's allowed her to keep up with her studies enough that she hasn't slipped back grades despite her time in hospital, though she struggles at times. Her biggest problem is socialization - most of her social skills have either atrophied or not had much chance to develop normally and she's years behind her peers, though she does her best to hide it with an aloof facade.
Note: Does not take gym class; has an exercise regimen she's supposed to do during that time period.
